Spring definitely sprung as the PAWS-PATAS animal charity had a fabulous fun day with their Spring Fete at The Oasis Pool Bar in Los Gallardos on Sunday 16th April. With the sun shining and not a cloud in the sky people flocked to enjoy an impressive array of entertainment plus meet some of the kittens, cats and dogs from the nearby shelter. With plenty of seating, food and drink on offer, folk were able to leisurely wander around the 19 craft stalls offering an incredible range of home made goods varying from greeting cards, toys, jewellery, ornaments, cakes, ceramics and much, much more. Karen Hillman’s famous onion bhajis sold out instantly and raised an incredible 230€!
The warmth of the afternoon weather coupled with the varied live acoustic sounds supplied a mellow and relaxing backdrop to the event. And for those feeling brave enough, the large swimming pool was open for use with sun beds available to have a siesta after so much activity. The afternoon proved to be an amazing success, not only raising an incredible amount of €1751 but puppy and kitten adoptions were secured and people came forward offering to volunteer at the shelter and in their outlets.
Kennel Manager, Vanessa Maipauw, who joined PAWS-PATAS 6 years ago explained “We always need more helping hands, there are so many ways in which you can get involved with the cats and the dogs. Not just cleaning and feeding but walking and socialising; perhaps even driving those lucky enough to their forever homes overseas. We also need fosterers and will supply food, bedding and medical assistance if required. If you have the time and wish to help, we can offer you what best suits you and your abilities”.
PAWS-PATAS receives no Government funding and in order to “keep the wheels turning” at the shelter, monthly costs can be as much as €12,000 including vet bills, electricity, water, maintenance, food, cat litter, cleaning goods, fuel, etc. Vanessa concluded “In the past 6 years I have witnessed 1,239 dogs finding their “furever homes” in Spain, Holland, Germany, Belgium and the UK. We are so grateful for your continuous support and generous donations”. PAWS-PATAS have 4 outlets situated in Mojácar, Turre and Las Buganvillas.
