Ten years ago, cat lover and long term PAWS-PATAS volunteer, Sam Spencer; assisted by another passionate volunteer Vicky Hall had an idea about raising much needed cash to help support the TNR (Trapping, Neutering, Returning) campaign for feral cats plus the amount of kittens which constantly get abandoned; crammed into boxes and crates and left at the shelter gates. Sam started a second hand book sale; holding it once a month and initially “opened shop” with just 6 boxes of books and raised 20€.
However, with her continued dedication and support of loyal customers, there have been times when hundreds have been raised; often totalling an amazing amount of 400€. Over the years more and more loyal and local residents attend regularly with some people travelling to Mojácar from Tabernas and Puerto Lumbreras to stock up on reading material and the “library” now has about 50 boxes of books and people are amazed at the diverse selection on offer.
Sam is always on the look-out for books in good condition but since the pandemic, it has been noticeable that fewer people were coming to Spain; hence the lack of new novels but thankfully when the transport van returns from the U.K, where cats and dogs are re-homed by DOGWATCHUK, it always returns with a fresh batch of publications.
Thousands have been raised to help continue with this campaign but sadly, it is never enough. The monthly book sale is held on the second Tuesday of each month (except in the heat of August) at Scotty’s Restaurant, El Tropico in Mojácar 10:30-13:00.
